Late Georgian Cut Steel and Vauxhall Glass Brooch

Cut steel jewelry was a highly prized craft that originated in England in the 17th century and reached the height of its popularity during the Georgian and Regency eras. Each tiny steel stud was individually hand-faceted and riveted to a base, creating a glittering effect that rivaled diamonds — and was worn proudly by fashionable society as a sophisticated alternative to paste and gemstones. By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, cut steel had become a hallmark of refined taste, collected and treasured as wearable art.

This exquisite brooch draws its inspiration from the floral and celestial — a design language beloved in the Georgian era. Faceted cut steel studs radiate outward alongside petal-shaped reflective surfaces, likely Vauxhall glass, which lend a warm, mirror-like shimmer to the piece. Three dangling teardrop drops hang from the lower edge, adding graceful movement and an extra flash of sparkle with every step.

Worn high on the collar, this brooch commands attention as a true focal point. Layer your favorite chains beneath it for a richly textured, one-of-a-kind look that is anything but ordinary.

All elements are intact. There is light scratching to some of the reflective petals, consistent with age and honest wear — overall, a very good example of antique condition for a piece of this era.
