Shell Cameo Brooch — Aurora and Cupid

This masterfully carved oval shell cameo depicts Aurora, goddess of dawn, or perhaps Nyx, goddess of night, carrying Cupid, torchbearer to the sky, upon her back. Set in a simple gold frame, the warm tan tones of the shell contrast beautifully with the ivory of the carved figures. The detail is extraordinary: the goddess’s draped gown and feathered wings, Cupid’s curly hair, and flower petals drifting from her outstretched hands.

A flying winged figure has long symbolized the divine, the dawning of a new day or the passage of night. The torch represents life, truth, and the guiding light of love. The roses she scatters evoke Homer’s famous phrase “rosy-fingered dawn” from The Odyssey, one of literature’s most enduring images of beauty. 

This design is based on a neoclassical composition, "Day", or "Dawn Aurora" originally created in 1815 by the Danish sculpture, Bertel Thorvaldsen.
